RETIREMENT COUNSELING

The Delaware Public Employees' Retirement System is committed to providing educational pre-retirement counseling sessions to members throughout the year. These informational sessions are designed to provide the member with a comprehensive overview of the current retirement plan provisions and various concerns regarding the retirement process. We are confident these sessions will assist the employee in gaining knowledge of the available pensioner benefits, helping to ease the stress of making life-long decisions. The counseling sessions may be performed in small groups or by telephone if preferred. The small group counseling sessions are open to a maximum of 12 members per session, and 'significant others' are welcome to attend. At the session, each employee will receive a personalized estimated pension benefit which will reflect their individual estimated years of pension creditable service. Benefit calculations will be reviewed and related questions also discussed. Pre-Retirement Counselors will be available immediately following the presentation to assist employees with individual questions or concerns. Members are strongly encouraged to attend one of our half-day pre-retirement workshops or group counseling sessions to obtain pre-retirement counseling

In light of the Pension Office staffing shortage and the unprecedented number of pension applications arriving in our office, an administrative decision has been made to suspend Estimate & Counseling services as well as Pension Creditable audits and reviews effective June 15, 2009 so that staff may focus on processing the new pension applications in a timely manner. These services will resume in September 2009. Counseling and estimate requests already in process will be completed. Individuals who elect to retire will have their service verified as part of the application process.
